UPDATE to I-81 Bridge Construction over Rte 80
October 18, 2016

October 17, 2016

After 9:00 PM the night of Thursday, October 20th, NY-80 between NY-11A and NY-11/281 will be periodically closed for periods of up to 15 minutes during the removal of the temporary bridge.   One-lane, two-way traffic will start around 8:00 PM to allow for setting up for the bridge removal.  NY-80 will be closed in both directions while the bridge is in motion over NY-80.   One lane will be opened at 15 minute intervals for traffic to move in either direction under the control of flaggers located at the intersections.

For the bridge removal, a large crane will be sitting in the I-81 median on the south side of the bridges.  The crane will lift up the south end of the bridge and help a bulldozer pull the bridge across NY-80 to the north median.  When the bridge clears NY-80 roadway, the crane will be disconnected.  The bulldozer will pull the bridge the rest of the way to the north median on rollers.  On Friday, the crews will start taking the bridge apart for shipping off-site.

In the next couple of weeks after the temporary bridge is removed, the crews will complete the top of the walls between the 2 new bridges.   Other work will be in progress in the shoulders of NY-80.  The work will include the installation of the storm sewer pipes to replace the south ditch and the new asphalt walks under the I-81 bridges.  This work will require occasional one-lane, 2-way traffic on weekdays, after 9:00 AM.

The contractor is currently a little ahead of schedule.  The last of the work to be completed will be restoring the median of I-81 and any minor touch up or repairs.  All work on I-81 and NY-80 will be substantially complete by November 18th.
